Museums in Turin to visit: recommendations of the Hotel Plaza

First capital of the Kingdom of Italy, cradle of the Risorgimento, industrial city and host of the first ever film screening in Italy: Turin is a city of a thousand faces and facets, which can be pleasantly discovered by visiting its many museums.

From art to history, from cinema to motors: here are the best museums that the Hotel Plaza recommends you visit during your stay in Piedmont’s capital city.

The Egyptian Museum

More than 6,000 archaeological artefacts, ranging from the Palaeolithic to the Coptic era: Turin’s Egyptian Museum houses an extraordinary collection, complete with statues, sarcophagi, mummies and papyri, second only to the Cairo Museum. An immense treasure, in which to immerse oneself to discover the history and civilisation of Ancient Egypt.

The Gallery of Modern Art (GAM)

The Galleria d’Arte Moderna – also known to the Turinese as GAM – is one of the city’s largest collections of modern and contemporary art.

Inside, you can admire more than 45,000 works, including paintings, sculptures, installations and photographs by the main exponents of 19th and 20th century art, including Fontanesi, Fattori, Morandi, Casorati, but also masterpieces of the international historical avant-garde, such as Marx Ernst and Paul Klee.

The National Cinema Museum

Not many people know that Turin was the birthplace of Italian cinema. That’s why right here, inside the Mole Antonelliana, Piedmont’s symbolic monument, you can visit the only Italian museum dedicated to filmmaking.

With a rich collection of photographs, sketches, objects and instruments, video installations and reconstructions of film sets that have become legendary, the National Cinema Museum traces the entire history of cinema, from its origins to the present day.

The Risorgimento Museum

Completely dedicated to the Risorgimento period, during which the political unification of the country took place, the Risorgimento Museum in Turin is the only one of this type that can be called ‘national’ in Italy.

The collection, housed in the magnificent rooms of Palazzo Carignano, includes paintings, arms, standards, uniforms, documents and other objects of various kinds that tell and represent this part of Italian history, in which Turin was a leading player.

The Automobile Museum

Listed by the New York Times in 2013 as one of the 50 best exhibitions in the world, the Automobile Museum of Turin presents one of the most interesting collections of rare vehicles in the world.

As well as telling the story of the Made in Italy car and automotive design and the evolution of the car from a simple means of transport to a true cult object, with an exhibition of over 200 models, the museum will give you the chance to admire some unique models. A few examples? The first FIAT car, with the reverse gear still not fitted, the Jamais Content of 1899, the first to exceed 100 km/h and the Ferrari 500 F2, with which Alberto Ascari won the world championship in 1952.

With the Hotel Plaza Torino you will have access to a reduced ticket. We’re waiting for you.

The Lavazza Museum

Opened in 2018, the Lavazza Museum is a must-see for all coffee lovers.

The museum traces the entire history of the Lavazza family, its industry and the company’s creative collaborations, taking you on a discovery of coffee in all its forms, through an interactive and engaging journey.
